The search for a missing man running for a seat on the Nassau County Legislature is now in its
fifth day.
Nassau County police said Petros Krommidas, 29, was last seen in Baldwin around 9 p.m. last Wednesday, April 23. He was officially reported missing the following night.
“Nothing surprises me anymore," Freeport resident Tom Ege said.
Krommidas is running as a Democrat for the legislature's 4th District, a seat that is currently held by Republican Patrick Mullaney. That district includes parts of Oceanside, Island Park and Long Beach; the latter is where police say he may be.
"He can't be a bad kid, can he?" Lindenhurst resident Allan Sudmann asked. "He's running for politics, he's got to have a clean record."
Police described Krommidas as 6 feet 2 inches, 230 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. According to officials, he was last seen wearing a camouflage print sweatshirt and gray sweatpants.
“In this area, there hasn’t been any trouble," Baldwin resident Andrew Jackson said. "It’s a nice neighborhood.”
Krommidas last posted publicly on his
campaign Facebook page that he spoke in Garden City on Monday, April 21, at a Nassau Young Democrats event.
"Thank you to the Nassau County Young Democrats for having me—always great to be with such a thoughtful, engaged group committed to making a difference in our community," Krommidas wrote on April 22.
New York State and Nassau Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs released a statement on Sunday.
"We are heartbroken over the disappearance of Petros Krommidas. Petros is a bright, driven young man who has been a strong voice for Democratic values. He is well respected by the community and represents the very best of our next generation of leaders. We are keeping Petros and his family in our prayers and remain hopeful for his safe return."
Krommidas was a 2013 graduate of Chaminade High School. A school spokesperson sent a statement to News 12.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family during this difficult time. We sincerely hope for his safe return."
Krommidas’ father released the following social media post:
On Wednesday, April 23, Petey parked his car by the Allegria Hotel in Long Beach, New York. He locked his car, took a towel, and around 10:30 PM walked onto the beach to exercise, just as he had done many times before. He has always been in great shape and, has many future plans including patticipating in a triathelon. He was not a stranger to cold water training. His family reported him missing the next day, as it is completely out or character for him not to respond.
"I don't know him, but it is surprising," Baldwin resident Julius Watts said. "It is surprising."
